I just started sewing about a year and a half ago so still consider myself a beginner. I took Home Economics in middle school and don’t think I touched a sewing machine after the class. My mother-in-law bought me a great Brother sewing machine that has been really good to learn on. I use Pinterest for most of my tutorials and am teaching myself as I go. Check out my Pinterest page for the tutorials I have saved here. For any potential newbies I would highly recommend the following tools to get you going!
(*this post contains affiliate links)
Fiskars Cutting Mat, Ruler & Rotary Cutter – This is one of the first things I bought when I got my sewing machine. It makes cutting multiple layers of fabric really easy and helps get clean lines.
Binding Clip – I use these for everything. They are designed to be used while sewing the binding of a quilt but I in many cases I replace pins and just use these, they are a lot quicker and easier to work with in my opinion!
Seam Ripper – Everyone needs one of these, I don’t think I would have been able to finish a single project without one! For all of the little mistakes made while sewing this comes in handy – and it’s always the machines fault, right?!
I hope this helps all of you new sewers out there, please feel free to comment on your favorite sewing tools below!
